History

The Higgins Center for Nonprofits was born because of the vision and generosity of Fred Higgins.

For more than forty years, Fred Higgins owned and operated Minit Mart Foods, a convenience store chain that has grown to include more than 200 locations. His success as a businessman never clouded his unique ability to slow down and put others first, always paying attention to the “least of these” in society. Fred was passionate about philanthropic work. He served as the first Kentucky Kids on the Block, Inc. Board President and paved the way for the puppet troupe to impact 25,000+ children annually with powerful life changing messages.

In 2015, Fred deeded the former Minit Mart headquarters to Kids on the Block, forever linking the business and the nonprofit that both meant so much to him. Initially called the SKY Center for Nonprofits, the building was renamed The Higgins Center in the fall of 2019.

The legacy of Fred will continue as South Central Kentucky nonprofits will forever find affordable rent and development opportunities at 958 Collett Avenue.
